Connected car, audio and connected services technologies collectively provide automakers bundled solutions for immersive in-vehicle experiences

CES 2019 – LAS VEGAS – January 7, 2019 – HARMAN International, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., focused on connected technologies for automotive, consumer and enterprise markets, is showcasing at CES 2019 the vehicle’s role in amplifying the connected life. By bringing together the company’s expertise in connected car, audio and connected services technologies, HARMAN is democratising vehicle experiences through innovative technology solutions that enable smarter interactions, improve safety and security, and help automakers seamlessly scale offerings for all vehicle segments.

“It wasn’t too long ago that a vehicle’s value was measured by its mechanical performance and driving dynamics. With the emerging popularity of shared mobility and in-vehicle technology however, value is now being measured by experience-per-mile,” said Dinesh Paliwal, HARMAN President and CEO. “With our CES 2019 technologies, HARMAN is helping automakers provide more connected experiences in a variety of segments that can be used today instead of years down the road.”

Each newly enhanced offering is designed to work together, often managed by a single HARMAN control unit, to help automakers pick and choose technologies to provide greater connectivity within vehicles, and across devices, allowing OEMs the ability to streamline their supply chain, while improving product flexibility. This also helps expedite the implementation of more advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) across model lineups.

Scalable Connected Car
Some of the most important in-vehicle technologies today are the instrument cluster and infotainment display, but far too often these are designed to function in a silo. For the consumer, this can make the driving experience seem disjointed and lead to a feeling of information overload. All of which, fosters a sense of discomfort and mistrust around connected car technology.

To foster consumer trust, and help drivers embrace the highly connected and autonomous vehicle experience, HARMAN has reimagined its Digital Cockpit offerings while ensuring they are scalable for a range of entry-level and premium luxury vehicles. In an economical application, HARMAN’s Digital Cockpit simplifies vehicle display layouts to present both critical and ancillary information in an intuitive and cohesive layout. Capable of showing ADAS feature information, turn-by-turn navigation, multi-media player information, feature menus and more, the entry-level Digital Cockpit can also seamlessly integrate with a user’s smartphone to bridge multiple personal assistants (such as Google, Alexa and Samsung’s Bixby) while adding HARMAN-specific driver related skills into all the clouds in an agnostic way.

For drivers seeking the ultimate in-vehicle experience for them and their passengers right from the factory, HARMAN’s Premium Digital Cockpit and Compute Platform with integrated modular hardware is an end-to-end package that seamlessly integrates a vehicle’s cluster, infotainment and safety features. Blending clear, vibrant QLED and OLED display technologies for optimal colour gamut regardless of the time of day, the solution also features facial recognition for driver monitoring using HARMAN’s Cabin Monitoring System – a suite of sensors to capture first- and second-order biometric signals from a driver to create a deeper human-machine relationship. Augmented reality for E-Mirror surround view and contextual navigation, as well as cloud-stored profile settings for personalised experiences are also featured in this fully integrated IoT capable offering.

Both variants of HARMAN’s Digital Cockpit can work seamlessly with the company’s suite of sensor technology – from Forward Facing Cameras to LiDAR – designed to not only bring more ADAS-equipped vehicles to market, but help drivers feel more comfortable with future-mobility technology.

Personalised, Smart Audio for an Elevated Communications Experience

With voice commands emerging as the norm for managing in-car experiences, clear in-vehicle communication is more important than ever before. HARMAN’s new Premium Communication solutions leverage the latest advancements in smart audio and acoustic signal processing to personalise the sonic environment and provide clear, frustration-free communication for all vehicle occupants – whether it’s with a voice assistant, someone on the other end of a phone call, or with each other.

Built on AudioworX, HARMAN’s proprietary, open-network development platform, Premium Communications is modular and scalable across vehicle segments. Together, its technologies address the challenges of the evolving vehicle interior and help OEMs better capitalise on integrations with voice assistants, while fulfilling consumer demand for better in-vehicle communication.

 Premium Communications comprises:

  • In-Car Communication (ICC), providing clear, safe 2-way communication amongst vehicle occupants –seamlessly, for every drive.
  • ClearChat with Far-End Noise Cancellation, bringing new levels of clarity for phone voice calls and voice commands.
  • Personal Communication Zones, giving each occupant an enjoyable, personalised in-car experience free from sonic clutter.
  • Multi Voice Personal Assistant Capability allowing occupants the freedom to use the voice assistant of their choice.

Leveraging the world’s leading microphone, voice processing and noise cancelling technologies, Premium Communications is a new way to go to market, changing the standard for the in-vehicle experience across all market and vehicle segments.

A Securely Connected Future
Ensuring all this connectivity functions securely is a primary consideration. HARMAN’s Ignite Automotive Cloud platform works with both entry-level and premium offerings to manage multiple in-vehicle solutions, from vehicle diagnostics to cloud-based driver profiles, all under one control unit that can be updated over-the-air by using HARMAN Remote Vehicle Updating Service (OTA). This also enables connected ADAS applications and features, as well as IoT functionality to provide capabilities such as route alerts and guidance via calendar integration and integration with home control systems such as SmartThings. HARMAN SHIELD – a comprehensive intrusion detection and prevention solution (IDPS) – functions as the car’s security system, capable of detecting, managing, mitigating and responding to cyber-attacks on connected and autonomous vehicles.

Keeping all of this technology updated and connected requires a robust data transfer network, which is why HARMAN is working to equip more vehicles with its 5G Telematics for vehicle to everything (V2X) communications. Powered by HARMAN’s powerful conformal antenna technology and capable of working in cars and motorcycles (via a Bluetooth helmet), V2X allows for faster message exchanges for increased roadway safety, and audible infrastructure and safety alerts.

HARMAN Opens First Experience Store in Europe, Creating a Unique Space Where Speed Meets Sound

The company’s first European flagship store offers visitors a glimpse into the world of HARMAN and its multiple award-winning audio brands

MUNICH, Germany – HARMAN International, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. focused on connected technologies for automotive, consumer and enterprise markets, today announced the opening of its first Experience Store in Europe. Located at Sendlinger Straße 46, in the heart of Munich’s popular central retail shopping district, the new location is designed to serve as a showcase for HARMAN’s award-winning audio solutions across all consumer and automotive categories. It highlights how the company’s heritage of craftsmanship merges with innovation and cutting edge technology in both the store design and the products on display.

“Our first HARMAN store in Europe transcends simple retail to a memorable visual and auditory experience centre.  It is a dynamic showcase for our family of brands including JBL, Harman Kardon and AKG, and it will feature select cars from our automaker partners that include our in-dash technologies and sound systems. The store will truly be a place where speed meets sound, combining our automotive audio and consumer audio heritage in one place. Through it, we will continue to transform how consumers interact with our audio products and brands,” said Michael Mauser, President, Lifestyle Audio at HARMAN.

“HARMAN is a house of world-renowned audio brands, and this new space is in many ways a manifestation of that house. Flagship stores tell our story and enable us to take centre stage to connect directly with consumers. This is an important step in the development and growth of our brands across Europe and we are delighted to welcome consumers to our Munich Experience Store,” said Ralph Santana, Chief Marketing Officer at HARMAN.

A dynamic showcase

The space is designed to be entirely transformed for various events including lectures, small concerts, parties, etc. – fixtures can be moved, digital displays can be taken over, colour-changing LEDs in the ceiling can wash the space in colours to adapt to every need and mood.

It will feature award-winning consumer products from JBL, Harman Kardon and AKG including headphones, portable speakers, soundbars, voice controlled speakers and much more. HARMAN’s automotive audio business will also feature in the store with a rotating selection of vehicles equipped with state-of-the-art sound systems from its portfolio of automotive audio brands including Harman Kardon, JBL, Bang & Olufsen, Bowers & Wilkins.

Pushing the experiential dimension even further, the Munich Experience Store will enable customers to interact not only with HARMAN’s products, but also with regular musical events, celebrity appearances and car launches in collaboration with automakers, amongst the activities. An additional Luxury Audio Studio is also set to open in an adjacent space later this year. In the Luxury Audio Studio, audio enthusiasts will be able to enjoy and explore products from HARMAN’s exclusive luxury brands like Lexicon, Mark Levinson, and Revel plus it will include a deluxe cinema featuring Dolby Atmos.

A design showstopper

The first of its kind in Europe, the Experience Store in Munich is intended to bring together speed and sound in a unique way. Across a 33.5-metre glass façade lies a modern, dynamic environment that pays homage to Germany’s rich automotive culture and legendary precision. Gensler Architects, whose portfolio includes Facebook’s California headquarters, Cadillac House in New York, and the stunning Shanghai Tower, designed the interior as the visualisation of a sound wave that guides consumers from the front to the back of the store, offering a cadenced retail experience that revolves around the visualisation and emotion of a sound wave articulated through both form and light.

A fitting location

Since opening its first flagship store in Shanghai in 2010, HARMAN has added such cosmopolitan locations as Tokyo and New York City. With its deep automotive roots, Munich was a natural choice for the first European Experience Store. The very design of the store’s interior evokes Germany’s powerful automotive culture and identity.

Becoming part of the local community

As part of the opening, HARMAN will also make a commitment to the local community. Every holiday season, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Munich-based youth athletic organisations. To kick off the campaign, HARMAN donated 25,000 EUR to the International Hockey Federation on the occasion of the store opening. The donation was handed over to German National Team Coach Marco Sturm and some key players from the silver-medal winning German Olympic championship team during an evening ceremony at the store.

The Munich flagship store is open to the public starting 26 September and every Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

HARMAN receives Volvo Cars Award of Excellence 2015 for delivering supreme Bowers & Wilkins in-car audio technology in the new Volvo XC90

STAMFORD, CT and GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN – HARMAN International Industries, Incorporated (NYSE:HAR), the premier connected technologies company for automotive, consumer and enterprise markets, announced today that it has won a Volvo Cars Award of Excellence 2015 in the “Technology” category for delivering the Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system in the new Volvo XC90.

Announced at The Volvo Cars Award of Excellence ceremony in Gothenburg, Sweden, this accolade acknowledges HARMAN among the company’s top-performing suppliers who provide superior solutions and services to contribute to the success of Volvo Cars.

Since 2008, HARMAN has worked together in a global alliance with the British high-end audio specialist Bowers & Wilkins blending the technical and commercial strengths of both companies. Based on more than 100 years of combined expertise in the premium audio field, the two partners jointly develop car audio solutions that cherry pick the best technologies and components from both worlds. The new Volvo XC90 features the first ever Bowers & Wilkins audio system built into an SUV and is the world’s first in-car system to use Bowers & Wilkins tweeter-on-top technology to optimise sound and maintain audio dimension within the cabin of the vehicle. The Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system on board the Volvo XC90 also features an incredibly compact highly efficient Class D amplifier containing all the digital signal processing power needed to realise the new and innovative features and functions in the system. To develop these different functions and seamlessly integrate into the vehicle’s interior, HARMAN and Volvo Engineering and Industrial Design teams collaborated to create a stunning in-car audio system to match the luxury of the vehicle for an extraordinary in-car listening experience.

“Tuning an automotive speaker system is a fine art that requires expert ears, hours of listening, and in the case of the XC90, extensive collaboration between Volvo, Bowers & Wilkins and HARMAN engineers,” said Michael Mauser, President HARMAN Lifestyle Audio Division. “We worked closely with Volvo’s experienced team to ensure that each speaker is positioned for optimum acoustics and the most immersive sound possible. We’re honored to be recognised among Volvo Cars’ top suppliers for our innovative technology contributions that enabled the development and continued success of the premium Bowers & Wilkins audio system in the Volvo XC90.”

The Volvo XC90 Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system features several unique transducer technologies for which Bowers & Wilkins is well-known, including nautilus tweeters, Kevlar cones and long-throw woofers. These combine with HARMAN’s next-generation QuantumLogic Surround Sound processing to provide an immersive, multi-dimensional 7.1 surround sound experience from any music source. The components are integrated into the cabin architecture and carefully tuned for optimum acoustics and the most immersive sound possible. For the first time introduced in a car is Dirac UnisonTM, the latest automotive tuning technology from Dirac using an innovative filter topology that transforms the physical speakers in the vehicle cabin into seven virtual ideal speakers that the audio tuning engineers can use to achieve their target acoustic response in all the listening positions at the same time.

HARMAN brings JBL premium audio on board the all-new Kia Sportage

The 2016 Kia Sportage features a JBL premium surround audio system with Clari-Fi music restoration technology for a best-in-class listening experience.

BARCELONA, SPAIN and KARLSBAD, GERMANY – To expand upon its current collaboration with Kia Motors Corporation, HARMAN International Industries, Incorporated (NYSE:HAR), the premier connected technologies company for automotive, consumer and enterprise markets, has put the famous JBL Signature Sound on board the all-new 2016 Kia Sportage. Drivers of this newest model of the compact SUV in Europe can opt in for the JBL audio system and can look forward to an incredible audio experience, including Clari-Fi, a patented HARMAN technology that restores musical depth and authenticity to compressed digital sources.

Powerful audio performance for SUV drivers

The Kia Sportage is one of Kia’s best-selling vehicles and one of the cornerstones of the company’s business strategy. As the market for compact SUVs has continued to become more competitive, Kia wanted to offer its customers a vehicle with a true differentiator to provide a unique driving experience. Artur Martins, Vice President Marketing, Kia Motors Europe said, “Every audiophile world-wide knows the JBL Signature Sound and we are proud that now drivers will be able to experience this auditory excellence in our all-new 2016 Kia Sportage.”

The optional JBL premium sound system in the 2016 Sportage delivers high-end audio technology to the compact SUV class. “The combination of the JBL Signature Sound and our revolutionary Clari-Fi music restoration technology brings a true hi-fi feeling to the class of compact SUVs,” said Michael Mauser, President Lifestyle Audio Division, HARMAN. “Perfectly tuned to the interior of the car, and with a powerful audio performance, we are offering a true best-in-class listening experience to the drivers and passengers of the new Kia Sportage.”

2016 Kia Sportage with JBL Signature Sound

2016 Kia Sportage with JBL Signature Sound

With more people than ever streaming music into their cars from digital sources, the proprietary Clari-Fi software in the JBL premium audio system counters the unwelcome distortion that happens when digital sound is compressed – like flat vocals or dulled percussion. Unlike other systems on the market, Clari-Fi does not blindly add equalization, bass boost, or other effects that alter the intended listening experience. It works by analyzing the audio files during playback and actually rebuilding what was lost.

To raise the listening experience in the Kia Sportage to new levels, the JBL system includes eight strategically placed speakers, optimized and tuned for the Sportage cabin and powered by a 320 watt amplifier – which is twice as many watts as the standard system. Also with Automatic Speed Dependent Volume Control, drivers do not have to adjust audio volume while driving: the individual channels are adjusted automatically based upon the vehicle’s speed.
