Falken expands its gaming presence into the evolving world of eSports

Fans of the iconic teal and blue livery associated with tyre manufacturer Falken can now compete in these distinct colours on the racetracks of Gran Turismo Sport and Project Cars 2.

Falken’s BMW M6 GT3 and its Porsche 991 GT3 R have been faithfully reproduced in Project Cars 2 whilst Gran Turismo Sports’ Logo Editor Function allows players to create a Falken-liveried car from 162 car types that include Aston Martin, Ferrari and BMW.

“Both these premium games offer a virtual experience that is amazingly close to the original. The tyres, the cars themselves and the racetracks are breathtaking. Falken has been involved in computer games for many years, and has always supported and driven their technological development. In fact, some of our customers even had their first encounter with Falken in a computer game,” comments Stephan Cimbal, Head of Marketing at Falken Tyre Europe GmbH.

Gran Turismo is a veteran on the motorsport games scene with 20 years’ experience and a desire for innovation and reinvention. This format continues to prove popular as Gran Turismo Sport has reached number one in the UK sales chart. However, Project Cars 2 for Windows, Sony Playstation 4 and Xbox One has become a worthy rival with its unprecedented simulation quality recently winning Gamescon’s ‘Best Simulation Game’.

Falken’s involvement in eSports began in 2004 with the introduction of Falken’s Nissan GTR in Gran Turismo 4. Since then eSports has, according to Nielsen and PwC, become a $500bn business that has attracted over 600 businesses

Black cab provides white canvas for celebration of Coventry’s 2021 bid

Using toy cars, Coventry artist creates ‘Two Tone’ Taxi to celebrate the best of UK’s very own ‘Motor City’

One of the last TX4 taxi black cabs to be made in Coventry has been transformed into a mobile ‘art car’ by Popbangcolour’s Ian Cook. The ‘Two Tone’ Taxi, a reference to the music scene that originated in the city, is the tenth ‘Art Car’ Cook has created, who paints using radio controlled cars, tyres and wheels.

Revealed as part of Coventry’s bid to be UK City of Culture in 2021, the LTI taxi celebrates icons, locations and stories from the city selected by residents as a community project run by BBC Coventry and Warwickshire radio. Highlights include Coventry City’s FA Cup win, the Jaguar E-Type, ‘Peeping Tom’ who famously spied on Lady Godiva and a ‘batch’, the local term for a bread roll.

“I’ve recently moved to Coventry and have set up my studio in a former car radiator factory,” says Cook. “It’s a city with a rich history and has been responsible for so many influences in all our lives.  From phrases such as ‘Sent to Coventry’ or ‘Peeping Tom’ through to cultural and design icons, it has created a bigger impact than many realise. This taxi, another icon produced in the city, is a great way to celebrate that.”

The TX4 Taxi used is one of the last of the derivative to be built at the Coventry factory before it switches to producing an all-new electric version at a new facility on the outskirts of the city. Over 130,000 taxis were produced at the original Coventry site over the past 60 years.

“Despite many factories having disappeared, Coventry has remained the centre of the automotive industry and is enjoying a boom in the development of new technologies such as electrification and autonomy,” adds Cook. “Add in events such as Coventry Motofest and you can see why it is very much the UK’s Motor City.”

Brought to life by recordings from BBC Coventry & Warwickshire which will help create an immersive experience, the taxi will be available for tours for around the city for a limited period. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance.

Falken to compete at Nürburgring in unique fan liveries

Team Falken will compete in the season finale of the VLN Endurance Championship at the Nürburgring on 21 October in unique liveries designed by the brand’s fans. The winning designs for the Team Falken Porsche and Team Falken BMW were selected from a shortlist of entries by Falken’s Facebook community.

The Design Challenge concluded the ‘battles’ between Team Falken Porsche and Team Falken BMW, which began in March and reached its climax at the Nürburgring 24 Hours when the BMW M6 GT3 finished the notorious endurance race in the top ten.

“The Design Challenge entries were all extremely professional and created with genuine passion,” says Stephan Cimbal, Head of Marketing, Falken Tyre Europe. “We were delighted with the designs and are really looking forward to sending the cars out onto the track in the winning looks.”

The Falken Porsche 911 GT3 will feature a design by Dirk Hinzmann that combines the track curves of the legendary Nordschleife with Falken’s iconic teal and blue colours. Meanwhile, Saunas Ramoska created the design for the Falken BMW M6 GT3, which is a collage of graphic elements from Falken’s ‘brand toolbox’ that illustrates the brand’s dynamism, agility and power. Both of the winning designers will attend the race weekend as Falken VIP guests to watch the cars bearing their liveries in action.

Falken dominates race and drift competitions around the world

Falken’s race and drift teams have secured an outstanding collection of honours this season with the tyre manufacturer adding a world champion and champion to its roster of three ‘king’ accolades and ‘queen’ title this weekend.

Falken pilot Yoshihide Muroya claimed victory at the final Red Bull Air Race of the season at Indianapolis to be crowned World Champion. His victory in the U.S. was his fourth of the year after success in San Diego, Japan and Germany, ensuring that he’s the first pilot from Asia to lift the coveted crown. In a nail-biting finale, Muroya pushed his high-precision skills to the limit to claim the course record by more than a second in his Falken liveried teal and blue aircraft.

The success story continues as Formula Drift star James Deane won his first Pro Driver’s Championship title in his Falken Tire Nissan 240. The final round at Irwindale Speedway concluded an impressive season of four victories with Deane’s third-place finish at the finale securing the championship title. His feat helped Falken take the Tire Manufacturer Championship title for the second consecutive year.

These latest successes add to Falken’s hat-trick of triumphs in the Federal Tyres King of Europe series. At the season finale at the beginning of October, Red Bull Drift Brothers driver Joe Hountondji snapped up the overall series victory while his brother Elias took second place overall to become vice-champion. The Falken-sponsored Drift Brothers had battled it out for the top places throughout the season, delivering superior speed, precision and spectacular skills when tackling the drift courses with over 600hp and Falken AZENIS semi-slick tyres. Joe concluded the season on 863 points with Elias just 28 points behind on 835. Both were over 200 points ahead of their closest rival. Joe then joined forces with legendary Dutch drifter Remmo Niezen from the Falken Drift Team to secure an overall win in the team rankings for the second year in succession.

Running alongside in the Queen of Europe series, Polish drifter Karolina Pilarczyk scooped second place in the final event, adding this to her three individual victories to claim the Queen of Europe title for the second consecutive year.

To round out Falken’s successes this season, Team Falken BMW took a historic win in the VLN Endurance Championship at the notoriously challenging Nürburgring in Germany. Throughout 2017, outstanding product quality, teamwork and consistent performance at the highest level have taken Falken’s team members to the top of their disciplines, with Falken showcasing its unparalleled combination of high technology and excitement.

“These successes are a fantastic confirmation for our athletes as well as our products, our brand and our company. And most of all, for the many, many members of Falken who have supported these projects with heart, soul and professionalism. The wins are also crowning achievements for our ‘Masters of Excitement’ campaign, which was launched in Europe this year,” comments Stephan Cimbal, Head of Marketing at Falken Tyre Europe.

Falken adds ZIEX ZE310 ECORUN to its summer tyre portfolio

Tyre brand Falken is expanding its product portfolio by launching a new summer tyre model, the ZIEX ZE310 ECORUN. The new tyre line offers outstanding traction and excellent grip on both wet and dry roads, coupled with low wear performance. It is the successor to the ZIEX ZE914 ECORUN, winner of numerous awards from independent testing organisations.

The ZIEX ZE310 ECORUN features Adaptive Constant Pressure (ACP) technology, which uses a new simulation process to guarantee a tread profile with evenly distributed pressure in the contact patch. ACP thus enhances directional stability and ensures even wear for longer tyre life.

The ZE310 is available in two tread designs depending on the size and speed rating, ensuring that tyre characteristics remain consistently good throughout the entire size portfolio. In narrower versions, up to 195 mm in width, the ZE310 ECORUN features a three-groove design that optimises tread rigidity and boosts the tyre contact area. For tyre widths over 205 mm, a four-groove tread pattern was developed that effectively improves water evacuation and aquaplaning resistance.

Falken’s engineering team also employed Advanced 4D Nano Design technology throughout their development operations to produce a futuristic tyre compound for the ZIEX ZE310 ECORUN that offers maximum mileage and efficiency plus improved running characteristics. This groundbreaking new tread has enabled ZIEX ZE310 ECORUN to increase its wear life by 30 percent compared to its preceding model, resulting in impressive energy and cost efficiency.

“The ZIEX ZE310 ECORUN is designed for drivers with a sporty style who nevertheless appreciate comfort. This new addition has expanded our portfolio into particularly high-demand sectors,” says Andreas Giese, Senior Manager Product Planning at Falken Tyre Europe.

The predecessor to the new Falken ZIEX ZE310 ECORUN was heaped with praise in independent tests, receiving a verdict of ‘Recommended’ from top German motoring magazine auto motor sport. Testers described the ZIEX ZE914 ECORUN as showing “well-balanced behaviour on wet roads, with extremely neutral handling and ultra-precise steering” plus “good ride comfort”. The tests examined a total of nine summer tyres in size 215/60 R 17H. The new Falken ZIEX ZE310 ECORUN has been designed to build on this success.

The ZIEX ZE310 ECORUN will be available from spring 2018 in 40 sizes from 14”–18” in series 70–40 and speed ratings H, V and W. A further 58 sizes will follow during the year.

The EU Tyre Label ratings for energy efficiency are between C and E depending on tyre size, while wet braking receives the top rating of A and drive-by noise gets a two.

Ilott signs off European Championship campaign with dominant win

Crushing display in Race Two at Hockenheim sees Ilott win by over 11 seconds

A stunning victory at the final round of the FIA European F3 Championship saw Callum Ilott once again reach the top step of the podium as the FIA European F3 championship concluded at the Hockenheimring in Germany. The victory, Ilott’s sixth of the season, was a highlight of the weekend that ultimately saw Ilott finish fourth overall in the Championship standings and help his team Prema, to be crowned Teams’ champion.

The weekend started well for the Hertfordshire teenager as he headed the free practice sessions before notching up two pole positions. The latter, Ilott’s tenth in 2017, meant he had secured 33 percent of the pole positions on offer this season. In the battle for pole for Race 3, Ilott was just pipped by team mate Maxi Gunther and would line up alongside the German on the front row.

Race 1 saw Ilott get away well from pole position but Joel Eriksson got a good tow from the Brit to get past just before the Spitzkehre hairpin. Ilott immediately fought back but he was then hit by Lando Norris. Slowed by the contact, which allowed Ferdinand Habsburg to find a way past the two scrapping Brits, Ilott had to settle for bringing the car home in fourth.

As the daylight faded ahead of Race 2 on Saturday, Ilott once again led the field as the lights went out. This time his challengers had no answer to Ilott’s searing pace as he started to build a commanding advantage from the off. By lap two, Ilott had pulled out half a second over team mate Gunther and then delivered a flurry of quick laps to extend the gap beyond any doubt. At the end of the race, Ilott was an incredible 11.3 seconds ahead having secured the fastest lap that was a staggering four tenths quicker than anyone else. “It was one of my best races in F3,” says Ilott. “There was a slight issue with the brakes at the start but they soon settled down and the car then felt fantastic. I could consistently and comfortably lap at a pace which made the difference.” The result, together with his team mates in second and third, ensured that Ilott’s Prema team secured the Teams Championship for a record seventh consecutive time.

Race 3 on Sunday morning was a less satisfactory outing for Ilott. Unusually for the BRDC Superstar, he was slow off the start and as the pack funnelled into Turn One, Ilott dropped down the order and was sixth by Turn Two. The resilient Ilott once again mounted a comeback drive. After a Full Course Yellow neutralised the race, Ilott closed the gap to Jake Hughes and after the restart, forced Hughes into a mistake at the hairpin that Ilott was able to capitalise on to get the place. Ilott then pulled away from Hughes to come home fifth. “The lights took a little longer than I expected to change so although I initially got away well, the revs dropped and I was swallowed up by the pack and my race was really compromised,” explains Ilott.

As a gesture of appreciation to the Italian team that has run Ilott through the season, he gifted his signed Race 2 Trophy to the Prema squad. “It is a fantastic, family team and I love racing with them,” adds Ilott. “Together we had aimed for higher in the championship but we endured some exceptional circumstances through the year that prevented us from having the consistency needed for a title shot. Lando Norris and his Carlin team did a very good job and I must congratulate them on their success. I look forward to facing him and other rivals from the championship in the years to come. We did however win the Teams’ Championship and I am proud to have played my part in Prema becoming a record breaker.”

Carly Car Check reveals secret life of cars to prospective car buyers

New app, launching in UK, highlights extent of tampering in modern vehicles with 15% of 300,000 cars having had mileage or identity manipulated.

A new app, that helps car buyers to uncover fraud in used cars they are looking to purchase is now officially available in the UK. Carly’s Connected Car app, available for BMW, MINI, Mercedes and Volkswagen Group cars, can tap into the car’s multiple computers (ECUs) to check for correlation with the visible speedometer and identify whether data has been manipulated.

Results from mainland Europe where the app has been available for three years, suggest the issue is bigger than consumers may think. Data collected from 300,000 cars highlighted that 23 percent of MINIs had experienced some form of manipulation with the figure rising to 27 percent for the E60 BMW 5 Series. On average, 15 percent of all BMWs checked had some form of tampering with 90% being related to the mileage and the rest concerning manipulating the vehicle identity itself. One of the most remarkable cases was a BMW 5 Series (E 60 generation) built in 2000: while the speedometer indicated 18,703 miles, the car had actually been driven 120,564 miles.  Such a significant difference could add thousands of pounds to the value of the car.

“Unscrupulous members of the motor trade or even private owners with access to the right equipment can easily adjust the electronic mileage clocks commonly found in modern cars,” says Avid Avini, one of Carly’s founders. “Our app goes beyond the visual and paperwork check that most car buyers rely on, interrogating up to 50 control units in the car to compare data such as mileage stored in them, with what is visible on the dashboard.”

As well as the mileage checks, the app can indicate how a car has been driven by its previous owner. The app displays fuel economy as well as average speed and journey times that the car has been used for. It also lists fault codes logged in the car, highlighting potential problems with the engine, brakes, infotainment, climate control and steering systems, sometimes before they have appeared visibly. The app can be used to clear some codes or error messages that typically would have required a costly trip to the dealer, saving diagnostics fees that can run into hundreds of pounds at main dealers.

Other preventative maintenance tools include being able to initiate regeneration for both Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) and NOx filters, preventing emissions and engine issues. “Because many cars only do short journeys, they don’t get the right sort of use to regenerate the DPF and the filter becomes blocked, leaving the driver stranded,” adds Avini. “If it gets too bad, it can cost £1000 for a new filter but the Carly app can be used to initiate regeneration from your phone and its progress can also be tracked so you know it has been successfully completed.”

Advanced users are also catered for with the ability to personalise settings and access hidden features. For example, being able to customise when the lights come on.

Prices start at £44.90 for the adapter (available from Carly website or Amazon) with the app (either iOS via the app store or Android via Google Play) available in both Lite (that offers a simple check function) and Pro versions. The Pro version of the app (£43.99) offers consumers the chance to control functions such as keeping the exhaust valve open, changing when the lights come on, or activating a digital speedometer alongside the diagnostics and car check features.

Carly has created app versions for BMW (incl. MINI), Mercedes and VAG cars (Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Skoda) that are available in the Apple AppStore and Google PlayStore. Moreover, Carly has a direct distribution of their Original adapters through Amazon UK.

Ilott secures his fifth win of the season at Red Bull Ring

Domination and disappointment; Ilott experiences highs and lows at the Red Bull Ring

A crushing victory on Saturday was the highlight of a rollercoaster weekend for Callum Ilott in the penultimate round of the FIA European F3 championship. Friday’s free practice at the Red Bull Ring had seen Ilott top the times,  a significant turnaround for the Prema Team from the previous Nürburgring round.  Ilott carried that strong pace into the first qualifying session and was consistently among the fastest runners before edging ahead of team mate Maxi Gunther in the dying moments with a time that was 0.016 seconds faster. The team’s joy at locking out the front row was short-lived when it identified significant damage had been inflicted on Ilott’s chassis and it would not be fit to race the next day. Prema made the decision to switch the chassis meaning the team’s mechanics were in for a long night to install Ilott’s existing engine into the new tub, thereby avoiding a grid penalty.  With the new car finally assembled at 4am, Ilott was quick to praise the team and returned the gesture by plying the mechanics with Espressos throughout the next day. “The circuit’s kerbs are notorious for inflicting damage and luckily we came prepared just in case. The guys worked really hard overnight to make sure I was back out on track,” says Ilott. “The least I could do was re-fuel them with the strongest coffee I could find.”

With no track time to test the rebuilt car, Ilott headed to the pole spot on the grid not knowing how its set up would suit the Spielberg track. Sporting a different clutch pedal to his regular chassis, Ilott made a cautious getaway from pole leaving him open to attack from the fast-starting Joel Eriksson. Eriksson harried Ilott through the opening lap looking for a way past but Ilott remained composed as he got to grips with a chassis he hadn’t driven since May. Never headed, Ilott was able to capitalise on improving tyre performance and started to build an advantage and by lap ten, he was already a second ahead. With apparent ease, Ilott continued to stretch his lead and by the flag he had built up a cushion of nearly two seconds over the Swede. Following pole, the dominant win was also topped by securing the fastest lap of the race, ensuring a clean sweep for the Brit.

“A win was the best way to thank the guys who worked until the early hours to make sure I could take up my pole grid slot,” adds Ilott. The win also closed the gap in the championship standings with Ilott moving back into third overall before Sunday’s double header.

Starting fourth for Sunday morning’s dry race, Ilott was again cautious off the line, slipping briefly to fifth before swiftly moving back up to fourth after running side by side with fellow Brit Jake Hughes. Ilott closed the gap to the third-placed Force India F1-backed driver Nikita Mazepin and began to put him under pressure, as the pairing left the other Force India-supported driver, Jehan Daruvala, behind with a 1.1 seconds by lap seven. Ilott worked to reduce the gap to Mazepin, and pressure him from close behind, but, hindered by brakes that were prone to overheating, Ilott finished fourth as the highest-placed Prema driver.

Sunday’s final race saw Ilott start third. A tricky getaway with the unfamiliar clutch left Ilott covering off Mazepin’s line but lacking the momentum as the train moved through Turn One. having lost ground to Mazepin and Aron,  Ilott then went on the offensive at the series of quick left hand turns halfway round the lap. Running initially three abreast, Ilott then passed Mazepin and stayed alongside Aron on the outside.  As the pair took Turn Seven, Aron not seeing Ilott to his right, ran wide, clattering into Ilott and forcing him off the track.  The ensuing wild ride over the gravel launched the car into the air and the damage was too great for Ilott to be able to continue the race and was forced to retire.

“I’m really gutted not to score points in the last race as up until then, we’d had a good weekend and I had closed the gap to second in the championship. Finishing in the top three is now going to be a little tougher but I enjoy Hockenheim and love a challenge.  Despite being forced to retire in Race 3, I outscored all my team mates again and I am really pleased that we also increased Prema’s 90 point lead in the Team Championship, which we are aiming to win for the seventh time.”

Ilott himself now has 297 points, standing 36 points from third and 42 points from second in the title standings. The final round will see the championship head back to Germany on the 14th and 15th October competing at Hockenheim.

The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System is available in various BMW 5, 6, and 7 Series vehicles as well as M5 and M6 models. It is also beautifully integrated into the interior of the all-new 6 Series Gran Turismo, where it redefines what is possible for sound quality within a car. The system was designed exclusively for BMW and features studio-grade acoustic technologies that have never before been seen in a commercial car. The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System uses exclusive materials like diamond, Kevlar® or Rohacell® for its loudspeakers to create a truly revelatory acoustic experience and Nautilus® spiraling diffusion channels to reduce resonance to a minimum. The system combines 16 speakers with a 10-channel, 1,400-watt Class-D amplifier with QuantumLogic® surround sound processing. The new generation BMW 1 (5-door), 2 Coupé, 3 Touring, 6 GT, M5, X3, and i3 models are all celebrating their world premiere at the IAA.

HARMAN and BMW are also the first in the industry to offer Apple CarPlay integration through a wireless connection. Other highlights include 360 surround view capabilities, adaptive cruise control, a multi-color head-up display, intelligent voice control, telematics services, remote services via the BMW Connected App and the BMW TeleService.
